“How much money is a bowl of beef soup?” the grandma sat down, counted the money in her purse and ordered a bowl of beef soup. The grandma pushed the bowl to the little boy, who swallowed (吞咽) his saliva (口水), looking at his grandma and saying, “Grandma, did you really have lunch?” “Of course.” His grandma chewed (咀嚼) a piece of radish (萝卜泡菜) slowly. Very quickly, the little boy ate up the meal.

Seeing this, the boss went over to them and said, “Old lady, congratulations, you are lucky to have the free food, for you are our 100th guest.”

Afterwards, over a month or more, one day, the small boy squatted (蹲) across the snack bar, where he seemed to be counting something, which shocked the boss when he happened to look out office window.

When the small boy saw a guest walk into the snack bar, he would put a small stone into the circle he drew, but the lunch time had almost passed, the small stones he put into the circle were hardly 50.

The boss was quite worried and called up all his old guests. The guests started coming one after another.

“81, 82, 83…” the small boy counted faster and faster. At last, when the 99th small stone was put into the circle, the little boy hurried to pull his grandma’s hand and went into the snack bar.

Hanfu fashion has become more and more popular with young people. China has followed Western fashion designs in recent years, but a growing number of young people are now looking to the past for fashion ideas.

If you look closely around your city, you might notice hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han dynasty. In a recently published report by an online shopping platform, about 2 million hanfu clothes were sold in 2019, nearly 4 times as many as those sold in 2018. Most of the buyers are between 19 and 24 years old.

But why has this traditional clothing become popular with young Chinese people? For some of them, it’s a costume for relaxation. Dafan, a 24-year-old college student, told CGTN that dressing in hanfu is a way for her to get away from the troubles of real life. Modern clothing, on the other hand, represents the identity(身份) people need to show every day. “Hanfu and modern clothing help me to show the different sides in me,” she said.

Other teenagers like hanfu because of the culture behind it. They see it as a way to reconnect with traditions. Its wide sleeves, crossed collars and flowing robes bring people back to ancient times.

“Hanfu is the symbol of the Chinese traditional culture.” Nanhe, a 21-year-old costume studio owner, told CGTN.

38. According to the passage, about ________ Hanfu clothes were sold in 2018.

A. 2,000,000                   B. 500,000                      C. 8,000,000                   D. 600,000

39. Why does the 24-year-old college student Dafan like to wear Hanfu in her daily life?

A. Because it is very modern to wear Hanfu.

B. Because it is a symbol of Chinese culture.

C. Because it is a good way to relax herself.

D. Because she doesn’t want to look different.

40. What does the underlined word “collars” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. A kind of material.   B. A kind of colour.      C. A part of clothes.      D. A part of picture.

41. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Hanfu will die out soon because it’s too old.

B. Hanfu will continue to be popular in the future.

C All the Chinese will wear Hanfu because it’s the symbol of the Chinese traditional culture.

D. Hanfu will go back to our daily life because it’s so popular.

D

I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.

Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.

With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots—one for rice and one for wheat.

Next I formed a clay oven (炉灶) and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake (烘烤) bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.

Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.

I tried to turn over the ship’ boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.

When it was time to launch (下水), I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant labor.

I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey

——Taken from The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
