     (NEW YORK) A French tourist highly praised for saving a two-year- old girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before jumping into the cold East River.

Tuesday’s Daily News said the 29-year-old young man left the spot quickly after bringing the girl to safety last Saturday.

He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank (河岸) near a museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had jumped in after him. “I didn’t think at all,” Duret told Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted very fast. ” Duret, an engineer on

vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the bank when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he walked close to the river. Without thinking twice, he took off his coat and jumped into the water at once.

When he reached the girl, she seemed lifeless, he saiD、Fortunately, when she was taken out of the water, she opened her eyes slowly.

     “Everything happens for the best. ” Whenever I faced disappointment (失望) , my mother would say this to me.

After I left college in 1932, I decided to find a job as a sports announcer(广播员). I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every radio station. But unluckily, I was refused every time.

At one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire(雇佣) a person without any experience and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations.
