One of my earliest memories is playing “shops” with my granddad when I was 5 years old. After 16 school at 15, I worked in a fruit shop, but I had no idea of how to run my own shop back then.

Several years later, I got married. My husband Eric and I heard about a shop for sale in the nearby village. We had a look and decided to have a shop of our own. That was January 1973. Shopkeeping was 17 to us, so we often didn’t know what the 18 were asking for. But we soon learned.

We can tell by the weather how 19 the shop is going to be. On wet days there are very few people around, and when it’s snowy people want bread and milk, as they’re worried about being snowed in. When it’s hot, everyone buys cold drinks and ice cream.

More people shop online nowadays, but they still come here for things 20 from their order. I’ve kept up with technology and have a card reader, but the shop itself hasn’t changed much.

Now, as I’m getting older, it’s open from 7 a. m. to 6 p. m. on weekdays instead of closing at 8:30 p.m. However, I keep it open until 2 p.m. at weekends.

Eric passed away 16 years ago, but I am 21 getting rid of (处理掉) the shop. I love it all—talking to the customers and getting 22 they want. There are customers who come in two or three times a day, and we see several generations of families. Customers often tell me their 23 and I offer advice if I can.

It was the 50th anniversary of the shop on January 13 this year. I wanted to do something special, so I held a party and had drinks and nibbles with customers. I also wrote a book about my memories in the shop. It’s called Just Ask Jenny, as I’m always the first port of call when anyone wants to know 24

This shop has been my life. I never 25 I’d still be here after 50 years, but I love it and the people. It’s what keeps me going, and I’ve got no plan of retiring.

16.A.attending B.leaving C.visiting D.changing

The bell rang. I picked up my backpack and headed for Writing Club.

“Today, we’ll share stories with critique partners,” said Miss Lisa.

My partner, Penny, sat across from me. We shared our stories nervously. While I had no trouble coming up with ideas, I did have problems with spelling. And grammar. And punctuation.

I read her story without stopping. It was about a homeless dog named Sunny who saved a family during a storm. Finally, the family welcomed Sunny.

“Wow, excellent story! I really love it!” I said.

“Yours too.” But she did not even look at me as she passed mine back.

When the club ended, Penny jumped up and picked up her backpack. Everything fell out. I noticed a book named Sunny the Brave. The description matched Penny’s story exactly. She had copied it! I thought about telling Miss Lisa, but she had already left.

Outside of the school, I found Penny on a bench. “You dropped this,” I held out the book. She looked up, tears in her eyes. Suddenly, I wasn’t angry any more. My job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not make her feel bad. But what could I say?

After getting home, I decided to ask mom what I should do. I found her in the kitchen making dinner with dad. Dad cut vegetables into perfect shapes. Mom mixed a sauce on the stove.

“Aidan, you’re just in time,” Mom said and held out a spoonful of sauce. “Taste this.”

“It’s good, but I think ...”

“It needs something, right?” she said. “I agree.”

“Here’s a measuring spoon,” Dad said, “so you can make sure to use the right amount.”

“I have an idea!” Mom added a teaspoon of a new spice into the sauce. “Now what did you want to talk about?”

I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. With Dad’s attention to detail and Mom’s sense of adventure, their dinners became delicious.

“I think you already helped me,” I told her.

At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker.

“I thought I would love writing, but I’m terrible at it,” she said. “I never have a single idea.”

“Well. I have ideas, but my sentences aren’t always the best. I wish I could write like you do.”

“I’d rather have ideas than write perfect sentences.”

“I had a new idea. I bet we could come up with something great! Let’s talk to Miss Lisa ...”

29.Which role should “critique partners” play in the writing club?

A.Competing to see who does better. B.Avoiding giving advice to the other.

C.Supporting each other to improve. D.Working on pointing out mistakes.

30.How did I feel after talking with Penny at the locker?

A.Hopeful. B.Surprised. C.Peaceful. D.Ashamed.

31.What can we infer from the passage about Aidan and Penny?

A.Aidan will be the big mouth to tell Miss Lisa.

B.Neither of them will be in the soup about the task.

C.Penny is the best word master in the class.

D.Both of them regret having lied to Miss Lisa.

The Spring Equinox, called Chunfen in Chinese, is the fourth of China’s 24 solar terms. It arrives around March 20-22 each year. On this day, the sun shines directly over the equator (赤道), making daytime and nighttime nearly equal—12 hours each. The word “equinox” comes from Latin, meaning “equal night,” reflecting (反映,反射) this balance of light and darkness.

In ancient times, the Spring Equinox was a signal for farmers to begin planting crops like rice and vegetables, as warmer weather and rain helped seeds grow. Even today, it marks the start of farm work across China. Nature also comes alive: birds after their long trip return from the south, flowers like peach, plum, and rape flower (油菜花) are right to bloom, and thunderstorms become more frequent (频繁的).

People celebrate the equinox with fun traditions. One popular activity is the egg-standing game. Families try to balance raw eggs (生鸡蛋) upright, believing the Earth’s position on this day makes it easier. Another custom is eating spring vegetables, such as wild greens, and sticky rice balls (tangyuan), symbolizing health and family unity. Flying kites is also widespread, with colorful designs soaring (高飞) in the sky to welcome spring.

The Spring Equinox teaches us about balance—not just in nature, but in life. As days grow warmer, it’s a time to enjoy outdoor activities, appreciate fresh beginnings, and care for the environment. Just like the equal day and night, it invites us to find harmony (和谐) in the world around us.

32.When does the Spring Equinox usually arrive each year?

A.Around March 1-3. B.Around March 20-22.

C.Around April 4-6. D.Around April 20-22.

33.What happens to daytime and nighttime on the Spring Equinox?

A.Daytime is much longer. B.Nighttime is much longer.

C.They are almost equal. D.Daytime becomes shorter gradually.

34.Why might people believe it is easier to balance eggs on the Spring Equinox?

A.Because the weather gets warmer. B.Because the eggs are specially prepared.

C.Because birds return and bring good luck. D.Because the Earth’s position creates balance.

35.What does the passage mainly want to tell us about the Spring Equinox?

A.To explain the importance of balance in nature and life.

B.To compare ancient and modern farming methods in China.

C.To list all fun traditions during the Spring Equinox.

D.To describe the scientific reasons behind seasonal changes.
