Mom Knows Best

When I was a tiny baby crying all night, my mom sang to me and stayed by my side.

When I was tired and hungry, she gave me food and warm arms to sleep in.

When I was two running through the field, she made sure I was safe and kept me from danger.

When I fell and hurt myself, she gave me a hug and lifted me up.

When I was seven coughing badly, she said no ice-cream for me.

But I talked back loudly, “I should be allowed to eat some! Give it to me now!”

When I was nine watching scary movies, she said it’d give me awful dreams.

But I shouted back    2    , “I should be allowed to watch it! I am not a baby!”

When I was a teen going out with friends, she said, “Please be back by ten!”

But I talked back again, “I should not be told what to do! I’m seventeen now!”

Now I’m an adult, thinking back to those times.

I coughed for days after eating that ice-cream

And had scary dreams after watching that film.

I was late for school from staying out past ten.

I regret talking back not listening to Mom.

Mom knows best, and for me she wanted only the best!

C

My interest in body language began with a teacher at university. He mentioned “Pinocchio” (匹诺曹) to me after saying that I always rubbed my nose when giving excuses for being late to his classes. In fact, when someone tells a lie, the person’s blood rushes to the nose and the blood makes it itchy. This little example of non-verbal (非语言) communication encouraged me to become a body language expert (专家). Now, I make a living by training people in non-verbal communication.

My study shows the human body gives more reliable (可靠的) information than the words we speak. The words say one thing but the body may say something different. It is known that crossed arms show you are unfriendly or angry, but what about facial expressions, postures (姿势) and gestures? All of these say a lot and can only be understood if you know how to understand the signs.

Office workers always need my services and I try to make them more confident by teaching them about body language. I give advice on handshakes and I teach the importance of personal space. They seem like small things, but can be of great help.

I like my work and feel that I’m providing a public service. However, whenever I meet someone new and I tell them about my job, they’re no longer relaxed at once. They don’t even move in case (以防) I see through them. It makes my work more difficult at times, but it doesn’t matter. That’s challenging as well as interesting.

32. Why does the writer mention his teacher?

A. To describe his teacher’s success.                         B. To explain why he chose his career.

C. To introduce “Pinocchio” effect.                          D. To introduce what impressed him most in his life.

33. What does the writer think of non-verbal communication?

A. Important.               B. Relaxing.                 C. Boring.                    D. Difficult.

34. Why do people look unnatural when knowing the writer’s job?

A. They dislike his services.                                    B. They think he makes too much money.

C. They don’t trust him.                                         D. They think he is studying them.

35. What can we learn about the writer from the passage?

A. He thinks little of gestures.                                 B. He offers service for free.

C. He is happy with his work.                                 D. He likes his teacher.

D

My first name was Philip, but when I was a small child, I could only say Pip. So Pip became my name. I lived in a small village with my sister, who married Joe, the village blacksmith (铁匠). My parents had died years ago, so I often went to visit the churchyard to look at their names on their gravestones (墓碑).

One cold afternoon, I sat on a gravestone in that churchyard, listening to the sound of the sea.

“Don’t say a word!” cried a voice, as a man jumped up and caught me. “If you shout, I’ll kill you!” He was a big man, with an iron chain (铁链) on his leg. He looked tired, and hungry. I had never been so scared in my whole life.

“Oh! Don’t kill me, sir!”

“Tell me your name, boy!” he said, still holding me. “And show me where you live!”

“My name’s Pip sir. And I live in the village over there.”

He picked me up and turned me upside down A piece of old bread fell out of my pocket. He ate it like a dog.

“So where are your parents?” he asked.

“There, sir,” I answered, pointing to their graves.

“What!” he cried, and wanted to run, when he saw where I was pointing. “Oh!” he said. “They’re dead. Well, who do you live with?”

“With my sister, sir, wife of the blacksmith.”

“Blacksmith, you say?” And he looked down at his leg. Then he held me and looked down into my eyes.

“Now look here. You bring me a file and some food to me tomorrow morning. If you don’t, or if you tell anyone about me, I’ll cut your heart out.”

“I promise I’ll do it, sir,” my body was shaking.

“You see,” he continued, “I travel with a friend, who likes eating boys’ hearts. Wherever you are, we’ll find you.”

As soon as he turned, I ran home as fast as I could.
