Resting my head on Helen’s shoulder, I put my arms round her waist(腰). She drew me to her, and we rested in silence.

We had not sat long before another person came in.

Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind , had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.

“I came on purpose to find you. Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burns is with you, she may come too.”

We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen Bums to be seated in a low arm-chair on one side of the fire place, and herself taking another, she called me to her side.

“Is it all over?” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away?”

“I am afraid I never shall do that.”

“Why?”

“Because I have been wrongly accused(指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”

“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”

“Shall I, Miss Temple?”

“You will.” said Miss Temple, “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate(夸大)nothing.”

I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.

There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere.

Dickon and Mary’s seeds(种子)grew and the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume.

Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects. One day, he watched a mole(鼹鼠)digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.

One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I’m going to tell you something very important.”

“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.

“I’m going to do a scientific experiment(科学实验),” he said. “When I grow up, I’m going to make scientific discoveries about magic and I’m going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn’t really understand.

“I believe that there is magic in everything.” continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden, too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I’m going to say—Magic is in me! And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?”

“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.

They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious.

“Now, let’s begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting(吟唱).

“Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”

Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.

Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first, he held Dickon’s arm, then he walked a few steps alone.

“I can walk! The magic worked!” he cried.

“What is the doctor going to say?” asked Mary.

“Nothing.” Colin answered, “because we aren’t going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It’s a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite.”

“He’s going to think it’s a dream,” said Mary.

Published in 1877, Black Beauty is one of the literature’s best-loved classics and is the only book Anna Sewell ever wrote.

In the book, Black Beauty, a horse, tells the story of his life in his own words. Black Beauty spent his young life with his mother on Farmer Grey’s farm. Farmer Grey is a good, kind man and the horses had a good life. His mother told him to be good and work hard. Bassanio looked at the three boxes, but he did not read the writing on them. He looked at the gold and silver.

“The world is tricked by appearances,” he said. “People often hide ordinary things with beautiful gold, silver, and jewels. People always agree with those who speak well, even if they say foolish things. Many people who seem brave are really cowards. How often do we believe in leaders who turn out to be bad?” Then Bassanio remembered the story of Midas, the man who loved gold too much. He wanted everything to be gold. He wished that he could make everything gold just by touching it. When he could, it was a disaster. He could not eat his golden food, and he was afraid to touch his daughter.

“No, I do not want these beautiful boxes of gold and silver. I will choose the lead box with its ordinary color. It speaks more to me than all the gold and silver in the world. Please give me the key to the lead box. Let happiness be mine.” Bassanio said to himself.

One of the servants gave him the key, and he went to the box and opened it. Portia was very pleased. She could not believe it, until Bassanio opened the box and saw the picture of Portia inside it. When he saw the picture, he loved her even more because the picture was very beautiful. He wondered how anyone could paint such a good picture of her. It was almost as beautiful as Portia herself. He looked at all the parts of the picture. He looked at the eyes and the hair and the eyes. All of them were perfect. But Portia herself even more beautiful than her picture.

The writing inside the box told him that he had chosen the right box. It said that he should go to Portia and look into her eyes. She would be his wife. Bassanio could not believe it. “Is it really true?” he asked.  “Will you really be my wife? I am afraid to believe it until you say so.”

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the season of light, it was the season of darkness. It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of sadness. It was the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five.

Mr Lorry was sitting in his hotel in Dover when a young lady arrived. She was pretty, with golden hair and blue eyes. Mr Lorry asked the young lady to sit down.

“Miss Manette,” he said. “I have a strange story to tell you, about one of the customers of Tellson’s Bank. That’s where I work.”

“About twenty years ago, Mr Manette, a French doctor married an English lady. They had a daughter, but just before she was born, her father disappeared. Nobody knew what had happened to him. Not long after his unhappy wife died, and their daughter was brought back to England.”

“I brought you—their daughter from France to England, and Tellson’s Bank has taken care of you since then. You were told that your father had died. But think, Miss Manette. Perhaps your father wasn’t dead. Perhaps he was in prison (监狱). Not because he had done something wrong! But just because he had a powerful enemy—an enemy with the power to send him to prison and to keep him there, hidden and forgotten, for eighteen years!”

“Can it be true? Is it possible that my father is still alive?” Lucie Manette looked at Mr Lorry. Her face was white and her hands trembled (颤抖). “It will be his ghost (灵魂)—not him!”

“No, Miss Manette,”said Mr Lorry gently. “He is alive, but he has changed very much. We are going there to bring him back to life.”

【导语】本文出自文学名著《简爱》,主要讲了坦普尔小姐和简的故事。

1.词句猜测题。根据第三段“Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind , had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.”可知,本段用明亮的天气暗示了简的日子也会明亮起来,因此猜测出这句话暗示了简的运气可能会变好。故选B。

2.推理判断题。根据最后—段“Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.”可知,简选择信任坦普尔小姐,A是正确的。故选A。
