People keep dogs and cats as pets because they are friendly. Now there are also lots of people who like keeping goldfish as pets. Goldfish are not like dogs or cats. It is usual for everyone to have a bad day. Someone may complain that such days come more often. However, the good news is that you can do many things to turn them around.

We can turn to your good friends. Our friends are always there to help us. They never leave us alone. So on a bad day, you can always ask for their help. Sometimes, friends have a good sense of humour. Their jokes can make you laugh a lot.

The school

My name is Mike. I am in Grade 7. This is my first year at middle school. When we are in Grade 9, we have to take an exam to go on our studies. We go to school five days a week and have seven lessons every day. We study Chinese, Maths and English. We also have other subjects like Geography, History and Computer Studies. I like Maths best among all the subjects.

Activities

We have different clubs after school. Some clubs are for fun, such as the Guitar Club, the Chess Club and the Basketball Club. Some clubs are for study, such as the Maths Club, the Physics Club and the Geography Club. I am a member of the English Singing Club. It is fun to sing English songs. We sometimes practice English in the English Corner. I have improved my spoken English a lot. On Wednesday and Thursday, we go to the library and borrow some books and magazines. Boys and girls have lessons together at our school. There are more than 1,800 students here. Many new students need help to learn more about the new school. At our school, the older students can join the Helping Hands Club. These big brothers and sisters talk to the new students and try to help them to work out (解决) their problems.

Travel off-season (淡季)

Go to your desired destination when the demand is low and take advantage of huge discounts (折扣). During the peak (高峰) season, the hotel and flight prices increase quickly, and it’ll possibly take more of your vacation time to stand in line because of the rush of tourists. So it’s best to find out when the off-season starts.

Surf the Internet while traveling

Websites can be helpful in finding discount hotel rooms. Look for places that do not charge extra for children if they use the existing bedding.

Stay with the locals

If you and your family are going to stay for a longer period, it is a good choice to rent a small apartment. It’s cheaper and the landlords may tell you a lot about the locals’ life.

Eat like a local

Why eat at big chain restaurants when you can experience something

new? Planning your meals is another way to reduce your travel costs. During your family trip, try new food where the locals eat. This will not only save money, but also provide (提供) you with a new and different experience. For smaller meals and snacks, avoid restaurants and try street food or other takeout.

Try hard to bargain (还价)

It is well-known that tourist-heavy places overcharge for just about everything, including clothes, travel goodies, souvenirs and so on. As a result, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask for bargains. Bargain hard to get the best price.

Choose local transportation

Don’t take taxis whenever possible since they are very expensive. Instead, take buses, railways or subways, which are always cheaper. If you are planning to stay for a while, you can consider renting a car, which is much easier than carrying your bags everywhere if you are moving around a lot.

Ways to Spend Your Summer Holiday at Home

Be a visitor in your own hometown

Every area has places of local interest. Now it is time to go outside in the right season and visit places of interest. You’ll be surprised at all the interesting things you’ll find, right on your doorstep. Who knows, you might learn something too.

Spend time with your friends

Use this summer time to spend a lot of time with your friends. Spending an afternoon in a coffee shop, or just hanging out (闲逛) with your friends, is the best way to get to know each other better and become true summer friends.

Learn a new skill

Now you have lots of time to learn the skills you really want to try. For example, you could start learning a new language if you’re going to travel to that country soon. There are lots of websites (网站) and apps. They can help you learn any skill, and often for free. Give them a try while you really want to learn.

Get outside

The weather is fine, so now is the time to get outside and enjoy it. You can do this if you want to. You could, for example, start learning how to grow flowers in the garden. You could also start walking around the local area or enjoying your local park. It’s your time, so spend it as you wish!

Organize (组织) home activities

Trying to save money? Then home activities could be the way to save money but keep yourself happy at the same time. These could be as simple as a back yard barbecue (烧烤), or they could be movie nights. Plan it well with your friends and make fun and cheap activities.

Here is a report on the lives of high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the US. It surveyed around 6,200 students from the four countries.

 Studying

Chinese students spend the most time studying. Almost half of Chinese students spend more than two hours on their homework every day. That’s much more than students of the US (26.4%), Japan (8.2%) and South Korea (5.2%).

Sleeping in class

Japanese students fall asleep in class most often. About 45% of them said they sometimes doze off (打瞌睡) in class. In South Korea, it’s 32%; in the US, 21%; and 5% in China.

Taking notes

South Korean students don’t like taking notes. About 70% said they write down what the teacher says in class, many fewer than in Japan (93%), China (90%) and the US (89%).

Distracted (分心的)

American students are the most active（积极的） in class, but also the most distracted: 84.2% say they chat with friends in class; 46.9% say they eat snacks and have drinks in class; and 38.9% say they send e-mails or read unrelated  (无关的) books in class.

Doing after school

In their free time, most Chinese students study or surf the Internet. Most American students hang out with their friends. Most Japanese students do physical exercise. Most Korean students watch TV.

Li Ruiquan: Xi’an is my hometown. It is the ancient (古代的) capital of China for 13 dynasties (朝代). It has a long history. Before, I just knew it from books. I didn’t feel its greatness until I went to the Xi’an Museum last month. There I saw buildings and treasures (宝藏) with thousands of years of history. I also learned how people lived in the ancient times by watching a video.

Lin Tongtong: Shenzhen is my hometown. I love her culture (文化) best. In the early days of

the Chinese economic reform (经济改革), lots of people came here to work and many of them succeeded (成功) and stayed. And in the Windows of the World Park in Shenzhen, there are models of different places of interests in the world. If you come to Shenzhen, you come to the world.

Zhang Weiwei: There is paradise (天堂) above and Suzhou and Hangzhou below. My hometown is the beautiful Hangzhou. Hangzhou has warm weather and nice views. I can often see tourists taking photos beside West Lake. They all keep praising (赞扬) its beauty (美景). I’m proud to have such a lovely hometown.

Zhang Qing: I love my hometown Chongqing. It is famous for its food. Maybe you have not

come to Chongqing yet, but you must have tried the famous Chongqing hotpot. It is spicy (辣的) and cool. There are many great mountains (山) and rivers in Chongqing. Here, you can see the great Three Gorges (三峡). It is really amazing to row a boat in the mountain rivers. Chongqing is named the most attractive tourist city (旅游城市) in China.
