Schools help protect kids’ mental (心理的) health in many ways. Some states in the US let kids take mental health days. Should schools offer mental health days? Here’s what some students have to say.
Bibi Tooren, 11
Schools should give kids days off for mental health, because mental health is an important part of overall(整体的) health. If you don’t feel well, it will have a big influence on your ability to focus. Kids get stressed with long school days. Plus, kids don’t have much experience dealing with mental health crises(危机).
Nugg Canales, 8
Kids should get mental health days off from school. Sometimes, we need to stay at home and play games to calm our minds. Some schools don’t allow music, and I need soft music to make me feel good about myself and the world. If you take a mental health day, you should not make up work because it adds stress to your life.
Hailey Young, 12
The weekend was created to give us time off, and we children need to learn to better manage our time. We hardly get our schoolwork done in the five schooldays we get. Plus, schools would need students to make up mental health days. They would probably do so during our real breaks: in summer vacation or winter vacation. Another thing is that, for some kids, school might be safe.
Johnny Cabel, 9
I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health. Having too many days off can have a bad influence on grades. And many students’ parents have to go to work. If students get too many days off, they might get left home too much. This could make some students’
mental health problems worse.

B. The importance of offering kids mental health days.
C. Several suggestions for improving kids’ mental health.
D. Some opinions about whether kids should get mental health days off.

“No building comes without carvings (雕刻),and carvings make buildings more valuable,” goes an old saying in Minnan, an area in southernFujian Province. The saying refers to brick carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.
The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrance of Minnan’s buildings. However, with development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan’s brick carvings have gradually faded (逐渐消失) from sight, said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Fujian’s Quanzhou City.
The 42-year-old has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes
to develop his own style of brick carving. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation (创新). ①
“Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking,” Wu said. “We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts.” ②
People in Minnan love tea, so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup holders, pot holders and other items. ③
Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow tail ridge (屋脊) and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philppines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architeture and the moon of his hometown.
Because of the market’s recognition of his work, Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his pieces, and the popularity of short videos has also given him new hopes of promoting (推广) Minnan brick carvings. ④
The art form originated during the Song Dynasty flourished (繁荣) during the Ming and Qing
dynasties. It is now an important part of national cultural heritage.
( ) 57. What’s the writer’s purpose in mentioning the saying at the beginning?
A. To attract more people to visit Minnan.
B. To give advice on developing brick carvings.
C. To introduce an area in southern Fujian Province.
D. To show the importance of brick carvings in Minnan.
( ) 58. What can we infer (推断) from the sixth paragraph?
A. Wu’s most customers came from abroad.
B. The pendant of brick carving becomes popular.
C. Wu’s brick pieces are warmly received all over the world.
D. Brick carvings become symbols of homesickness for overseas Chinese.
( ) 59. Which is the most suitable place to put the sentence “They have been warmly received by both local people and foreign visitors.”?

A recent report showed that, in the US alone, 27 million tons of plastic ended up in landfills in 2018, but only 3.1 million tons were recycled. Worldwide the numbers are similarly bad, with just 9% of plastic being recycled. The results are even worse for certain types of plastic. Now, researchers at The University of Queensland have found a kind of worm could be the key to plastic recycling. The worm can eat through polystyrene(聚苯乙烯). To study how worms deal with purely plastic food, researchers separated 135 of the worms into three teams: one was fed only wheat, another was fed only plastics, and the third was given nothing.
“We found the the first team of worms have been much healthier than the second and third teams, more than doubling their weight over the study which lasts three weeks. Though the second team of worms made less impressive gains, they still put on more weight than the third team of worms,” Dr. Rinke said. “This suggests the worms can get energy from plastics, most likely with the help of their gut microbes(肠道微生物).”
“The worms are like mini recycling factory, eating the polystyrene and then feeding it to their gut,” Dr. Rinke said. It’s hoped this will improve plastic waste recycling and reduce landfills. Researchers said they aim to grow the gut microbes in the lab and further test its ability to degrade(分解) polystyrene. Then they can look into how to use this to a level required for a whole recycling factory.
阅读以上信息,用恰当的词完成下面的短文,每空一词。

The topic of China’s “slash youth”(斜杠青年) has become hot on social media recently, drawing attention to the different pursuits(追求) of the younger generation.
The slash youth means those who refuse to be accepted by just one personal identity(身份). They like to present themselves as different identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and excellent singer, and an engineer and band player. Rather than comfortable life, they pursue meaningful achievement.
A different career can make them develop new experiences and talents. What’s more, they can get other people’s recognition(承认) and they can have a sense of satisfaction themselves.
A study on “slash youth” published in the China Youth Research magazine talks about the background of this phenomenon(现象): with part of modern society’s usual organization and stability norms(稳定的规范) are broken, flexible labor(灵活的劳动力) markets has appeared. Young people also face the difficult time of self-development, including the sense of powerlessness, lost sense of value in the job, which forces them to re-find the meaning of work.
“The slash life shows that our society is changing better and better in some ways, and it welcomes everyone’s self-development,” said Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to depend on work and money for their sense of self-development. They would like to create their own identities.” The researcher added that against the background that people have different interests and are willing to pay for these interests nowadays, the slash life of the youth would drive the growth of a new economy(经济) and its development.
