(I am Gulliver)
On 20th June 1702, I set off for Surat, on a ship called the Adventure. And indeed “adventure” was really an appropriate name for that ship, and for everything that happened on the trip.
The first part of our trip went well. But later there were some terrible storms. The winds were so strong that they sent our ship off course(航线). We didn’t know where we were.
At last, when the storms stopped, we saw an island. We had no more drinking water, so the captain(船长)sent me to find some fresh water on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we got there, I travelled around the island by myself while the men looked for water.
That was a big mistake. When I went back, there were no men and no boat! Then I saw them rowing back to our ship with a giant(巨人)following them in the sea! They were very afraid. I ran as fast as I could. I then climbed up a big hill and when I looked around, I saw fields. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.
“On my last trip, I was a giant on an island of tiny people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giant!” It was not a nice feeling. I was so sad and hid behind a big tree. I had to think of a plan, but at that time one of the giants saw me.

I noticed a dad and his son at the park. His son wasn’t able to communicate, but he seemed satisfied with sitting in the sand. The dad explained to me that his son could only make some sounds. The boy had been in speech therapy for years. After so much time in therapy, the boy was able to maintain(保持)eye contact for a few seconds and the father was delighted by the achievement! He told me how expensive the therapies for his son’s specific needs were and what a pleasure it was to see all of the years of hard work pay off. The father and son connected, and those few seconds of eye contact meant the world to that dad!
As we talked about therapy, the dad shared with me that his goal for his boy was to someday be able to go for ice cream together. He said his father used to take him out for ice cream and he hoped he could do the same with his child. Suddenly, the son stopped putting his fingers in the sand, looked at his father and said, “Hi. ” Seconds later, the boy went back into his own world. The dad wanted to say something, but he couldn’t. His love for this boy was so great that the words would not come. But what did come were tears. Those tears showed how proud he was of his son. A father loves his child more than words will ever be able to express.
Although they were strangers to me, I am honored(荣幸的)to have shared in this precious celebration of achievement in that boy’s young life. I hope someday they will be able to go for ice cream and have a beautiful father and son outing. This event touched me deeply and made me consider my relationship with my own father. I hope that as they communicate further, more and more memories will be created for them to share. I believe the feelings held by all great fathers—their hard work, their love, their pride, and their tears of love—are all the same.
58. What do we know about the boy?
A. His eyes were hurt. B. He loved going to the park.
C. He couldn’t make any sound. D. He made progress through therapy.
59. How did the father feel after his son say “hi” to him?
A. Sad. B. Proud. C. Worried. D. Impatient.
60. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A father’s unconditional love is touching.
B. Not all of the parents care about their children’s achievements.
C. Good relationship will be formed between father and son.
D. Disabled children will be given more attention.
61. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Experiencing Speech Therapy! B. Maintaining Eye Contact with Father.
C. Feeling a Father’s Love! D. Having a Beautiful Father and Son Outing.
D
Babies don’t learn to talk just from hearing sounds. They are lip-readers too. It happens during the stage when a baby’s babbling (咿呀声) gradually changes from unclear voices into that first “mama” or “dada”. The baby in order to do like you has to figure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.
It doesn’t take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more evidence that quality face-time with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD.
But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy Hansen-Tift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4-month-olds gazed(凝视) mostly into her eyes. The 6-months-olds spent the same amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8-and 10-month-olds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker’s eyes.
But what happened when these babies are used to English heard Spanish? The 12-month-olds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to recognize(辨别) the unfamiliar sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语)that shows babies’ brains adjust themselves to distinguishing the sounds of their native language over other languages in the first year of life.
The continued lip-reading shows the 1-year-olds clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to study that this is “a fairly heroic data set” says Duke University cognitive neuroscientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fascinating that he wants to know more.
62. According to the first paragraph, babies ________.
A. might get its voice “mama” by lip-reading B. learn to talk just from hearing the sounds
C. like to figure out how to shape their lips D. communicate with parents through gestures
63. What is necessary in developing babies’ speech according to Lewkowicz?
A. Playing baby DVD nearby. B. Teaching babies to read English.
C. Speaking with babies face to face. D. Speaking different languages in front of babies.
64. Which of the following shows the right change of babies’ eye gaze according to the text?
65. What would be the best title of the text?
A. Babies Have Different Methods to Talk B. Babies Try Lip-reading in Learning to Talk
C. Babies Are Suitable to Learn Two Languages D. Babies Can Easily Accept Foreign Language

六、回答问题(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
阅读下列短文,根据短文内容回答问题,答案不超过10个词。
I woke up as the plane started to land at Auckland airport. I had not slept for much of the flight from Singapore because I was so excited. This was my first trip abroad without my parents. It was a school trip for Grades 6 students, all aged 11 years old.
After the arrival, we got on a bus which took us to a place called Miranda, where we stayed the night.
The next day we got up early, had breakfast, and took the bus to Thames. On the way we stopped at a gold mine (矿). I searched for pieces of gold but didn’t find any. At Thames we visited a cave where we saw a huge spider eating a fly. That was interesting!
The third day was very unforgettable. We went to a Maori village. Maoris are the original people who have lived in New Zealand for thousands of years. I made friends with a Maori boy of my own age called Aaron. Aaron took me to his large house. He had many pets including a dog, a cat, a chicken and…an ostrich (鸵鸟)! The ostrich was much taller than me with a funny head and long legs. It was a little bit frightening!
That night for dinner we had a barbecue and finally before going to bed we played a game of football. My team won 3 to 1.
The next morning was our last day in New Zealand. We went back to Aaron’s village where the Maori men lined up and performed a haka-this is a war dance. We then sang a song for them and then everyone became friends. It was a wonderful experience.
After that we went to a place called Rotorua where we saw boiling mud pools and geysers (间歇喷泉). The geyser shot water into the air 10 meters high! It was so amazing!
That night we took the bus back to the airport and said our goodbye to the beautiful country of New Zealand. I would love to come back to visit again someday.
