Technology has brought ancient poets “back to life”. At the World Robot Conference 2023 in late August in Beijing, there were two robots that looked like the Chinese poets Li Bai and Du Fu.While Li Bai was holding up a cup of wine, Du Fu was sitting at a desk, writing.

These are called bionic (仿生的) robots. The robot’s skin is usually made of silicone (硅胶),  CGTN explained in a video about Liaoning-based producer EXROBOTS. The robot’s skin is very soft. You can even see veins (血管) under the skin.

Another human-like robot also attracted attention recently. It was created by US company Apptronik. Named Apollo, it has around 30 muscles (肌肉). For now, the robot can only make simple movements, such as walking and waving . The robot’s head has cameras and sensors (传感器) inside. They can help it map out a 360-degree view (景象) of its environment. They also help the robot keep balance when walking on unstable (不稳定的) surfaces.

Nowadays, bionic human-like robots mostly work with humans, such as by being tour guides or helping visitors at front desks. This could be because people are comfortable living and working with machines that look and act like them. They can “strike a chord (引起共鸣) with people,” a US robotics scientist Marc Raibert told New Yorker.

As more human-like robots come out, safety will be the key, according to the Robot Report website. When a 70-kilogram robot breaks down and falls, humans nearby may get hurt.

A. how human-like their robots areB. how soft the robot’s skin is

C. what the robot’s skin is made fromD. how different it is from other robots

3. What can Apollo do with built-in sensors?

A. Wave at humans.         B. Walk stably.       C. Know human faces.       D. Draw attention.

4. In which situation can bionic robots help you now?

A. When you want someone to repair your car.

B. When you want someone to travel with you.

C. When you don’t want to do housework.

Have you ever bought anything that you can’t touch and see? Nowadays, virtual (虚拟的) products have become a rising trend (潮流) on Taobao.

On June 9, the topic of “Have you bought virtual mosquitoes (蚊子) for your friends” started a discussion on Weibo. If you buy virtual mosquitoes for your friend, someone will add your friend on WeChat and buzz (嗡嗡叫) to them by word simply for fun.

This is just one of the examples of virtual products. There is also a “virtual tree hole”. This means that you can pay for someone to listen to you talk your life. “Virtual supervision (监督)” is when you need someone to keep an eye on you if you can’t study or read carefully. The price is usually from 10 yuan to several hundred yuan, depending on different needs.

Under the increasing pressure of studying, working and relationships, more people want to find ways to lower their stress and keep themselves happy.

“Some secrets can’t be shared with family and friends. Talking to strangers is a better way for me,” Yu Xiaoyu, 30, who has bought a “virtual tree hole” said. “Also, strangers are more objective (客观的) to look at my problems.” It’s also less trouble for family and friends because they are also busy, Yu added.

However, the experience isn’t always good. Yu met a “tree hole” that didn’t pay much attention to her problems. “It’s a matter of luck,” Yu said. “Sometimes you happen to talk to someone really patient and even professional; sometimes you meet someone who ends up making you feel even worse.”

Amy was a dear little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she should do.

In the village, Mr Thornton kept a store where he sold fruits of all kinds, including berries when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, I noticed some fine, ripe blackberries on Mr Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all you pick for me.”

Amy was excited about the thought of making some money to help her mom, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Building a country is never easy. It takes hard work from generation to generation. But how about destroying it? A new report from The Guardian said long time of climate change can do that.

The report said Tuvalu will be the first country to be completely lost due to climate change.

Tuvalu is a Pacificisland nation with nine islands and 12,000 people. It has long been at risk from rising sea levels. Now, 40 percent of the area in its capital is underwater at high tide (高潮). By the end of the century, it is believed that all the islands will be underwater. So many people in Tuvalu have often moved around the country and even to other countries.

To help with the problem, the country plans to build its country in the metaverse(元宇宙). The digital country will recreate the same landscape (景观) and keep its cultural and historical records. No matter where they live in the real world, the people in this country will have their identity (身份) and “live” in its online communities. The government hopes to manage and serve them in cyberspace (网络空间).

This news made many people in Tuvalu excited. But Li Zuxi, director of the metaverse lab of Qingbo Intelligent Technology, said it may not be the best solution.

“Though the digital nation belongs to Tuvalu, it’s still built on a metaverse platform (平台),” said Li. “Now, the metaverse is not mature, which may bring some problems.” He gave us an example. If people from other countries enter the space of the digital country but just show their names, how do people know if they do or do not truly belong to that country?

Li added that instead of trying our best to build digital nations, it’s better to pay attention to saving the real world now.

A. Rising sea levels.B. A dropping population.

C. The low levels of high tide.D. There is not enough water to use.

B. The “new” Tuvalu is larger than the real one.

C. It has no records of culture and history.

D. People of the “new” Tuvalu have no identity.

4. What is Li Zuxi’s opinion about the news?

A. The metaverse world is safe.B. He fully supports the rebuilding of Tuvalu.

C. He calls for more countries to enter the metaverse.D. It’s hard to manage a digital country.

5. What can we learn from the story?

A. The metaverse is replacing the real world.

B. The metaverse can help to protect culture.

C. Climate change happens more quickly than ever.

D. The metaverse has a bright future.

When you think of the sea, you may not think of Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia. But recently, the “seafood” produced in these places has become popular, especially after Japan put nuclear-contaminated water (核污染水) into the sea.

In Nilka county (尼勒克县) in Xinjiang, about 6,000 tons of rainbow trout (虹鳟鱼) will be produced this year. Rainbow trout belongs to the same family as salmon (鲑鱼), which is a kind of well-known seafood. It tastes like salmon too.

Why do farmers there choose to grow fish? The weather in some parts of Xinjiang is seldom hot, and the rivers are fed by meltwater (融水) from the Tianshan Mountains. Water deeper than 6 meters always stays at 10 C. As the meltwater is very clean and cold, it’s a “comfortable” home for fish, Li Chunyu, a worker at a fish company said.

To make sure the river stays clean, the company uses machines to clean fish waste in the water. They also use net cages (网箱) that are good for the environment. The nets are about 51 meters wide and lie 25 meters deep in the river.

Meanwhile, in Inner Mongolia, whiteleg shrimp (南美白对虾) grows well. Saline soil (盐碱土) covers a large part of the desert where few plants are able to grow. Farmers used to put water from the Yellow River onto the farmland to wash away the salt. This was a waste of salty water.

Scientists then decided to create “seawater” with the salty water by adding in some other components (成分). Whiteleg shrimps can live well in this kind of water. They taste no different from the same kind of shrimp that grows in the sea.

1. Rainbow trout comfortably live in _____.

A. any open water areaB. warm and clean rivers

C. salty and warm oceansD. cold and clean rivers

2. People turn their eyes from Japan’s seafood to Xinjiang’s because _____.

A. Xinjiang’s seafood is much tastier

B. the ocean environment is polluted

C. people find a new ocean in Xinjiang

D. Xinjiang produces all kinds of seafood

3. To avoid water pollution caused by growing fish, the company _____.

① cleans the water with machines

② grows fish in fixed water areas

③ grows one kind of fish once a year

④ cuts down the fish production

A. ①②  B. ③④C. ①②③D. ②③④

4. Why is whiteleg shrimp introduced in the story?

A. To show the importance of rivers to a country.

B. To introduce the safety of eating seafood.

C. To compare it with common whiteleg shrimp.

D. To show another “seafood” grown without using the sea.

5. What is the hidden message of the story?

A. Life will not be different without seafood.

B. Japan shouldn’t let out nuclear-contaminated water.

C. China won’t be short of fishery products.

D. Xinjiang is rich in natural resources.

These days, we see many Chinese fantasy (玄幻) and comic shows. We’re surprised by their ties to our traditional culture. Names of the worlds and roles in these shows are good examples of this. They make the shows both fun and deep.

Lost You Forever (《长相思》), a recent popular costume show (古装剧), has created a world called dahuang, meaning wild areas. This term is from the Classic of Mountains and Seas (《山海经》), one of China’s oldest books about myth stories.

In the TV show, humans, monsters (妖怪) and fairies (仙子) live together in the world of dahuang. It perfectly shows the ancient ideas and stories seen in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Ancient people believed that all lives have souls (灵魂), and that they can live together in peace.

Traditional culture is also seen in the recent season of cartoon show Fog Hill of Five Elements (《雾山五行》). It tells the story of people using the power from the five traditional elements to fight evil (恶魔). The cultural importance it carries has started a hot discussion among people who watched it.

In the show, the three big monsters are named greed (贪), anger (嗔) and ignorance (痴). These are the three poisons (毒) in Buddhism (佛教). The five families with the power of the five elements have to fight the three monsters to protect the world. It shows the Buddhist idea that, for a happy life, the three poisons need to be controlled.

Both cartoons and TV dramas now use modern technologies and new stories to present (呈现) old traditions. They breathe new life into both Chinese culture and TV shows.

1. What is dahuang like in the costume show Lost You Forever?

2. What story does the cartoon show, Fog Hill of Five Elements, tell?

3. Where are the three monsters’ names from in the cartoon show?

4. What Buddhist idea does the cartoon express?

5. What’s the good side of connecting TV shows and Chinese culture?
