My father did not get better, and I had to do more work in the inn(酒馆). One morning as I was having breakfast, a man came in. He had two legs, but he had two fingers missing from his left hand.He asked for rum(朗姆酒), and I sold him some.

“Yes,” I said, “A man we call ‘Captain’ is staying here. He has a cut on his face. But he is out now.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know,” I said, “but he usually goes for a walk to the rock.”

“The rock!” he said.“Ah, yes. That’s where he’ll be.”

He laughed, but it was not a friendly laugh. “I’ll wait here for him,” he said and he hid behind the door.

I did not know what to do. “This man is not a friend of the Captain,” I thought. I tried to leave the inn to tell the Captain about the man, but he stopped me.

“You do as I say,” he said.“Sit here and keep your mouth shut. I want to give the Captain a surprise.”

Soon the Captain came back to the inn. As he walked through the door, the stranger said, “Hello, Bill!”

Then the two men began fighting with their knives. The Captain cut Black Dog’s shoulder. Then Black Dog ran away.

The Captain came back into the inn.

“Bring me rum, Jim,” he said.“Then I must get out of here.”

My father and I were both angry. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted my father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out to the street.

I walked aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me I seemed to see my childhood from another space: happy.

But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because my dad is getting old.We have different ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I walked in the streets. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the building where I lived, I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself: “Is my father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”

In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, my dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except my father’s.

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking me underneath the covers (掖被子) while I am sleeping.

This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe … With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that there wasn’t the iron door that I had imagined between us at all. Love — it’s second to none.

For years we’ve accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of aging as wrinkles(皱纹) and gray hair. But now a new book suggests that we’ve got it all wrong.

According to The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain is the best between our 40s and 60s.

Besides, rather than losing many brain cells(细胞) as we age, we keep them, and even produce new ones well into middle age. For years it’s been believed that brain, much like the body, declines(衰退) with age. But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age suggests different findings.

This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on average, people performed better on cognitive (认知的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s. Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, and problem solving. They were weaker in number ability and perceptual (知觉的,感知的)speed — how fast you can push a button when you are ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as problem-solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond. In short, researchers prove that we get wiser with age.

Scientists are also finding that we are happier with aging. A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that when we’re younger we need to focus more on the unhappy things of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the world, but as we get older we’ve learned our lessons and are aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.

42、Barbara Strauch probably agrees that ______.

A、the young are better at dealing with important things

B、wrinkles and gray hair are the only symbols of aging

C、aging leads to the decline of the function of the brain

D、people’s brains work best between their 40s and 60s

43、The continuing research has found older people perform better on ______.

A、vocabulary tests                                              B、number ability

C、perceptual speed                                             D、body balance

44、People are happier with aging because ______.

A、they know how to share feelings                       B、they learn to value the time left

C、they cannot focus on unhappy things                 D、they do not realize the possible dangers

45、What is the main idea of the passage?

A、People get weaker with age.                             B、People get more forgetful with age.

C、People get wiser with age.                               D、People get more confident with age.

It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.

When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-you notes and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?

To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbors. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play …

While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app paying attention to other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me to admire my own life.

In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers… In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:

Dear Julie,

I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting me and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food.Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary (周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.

Thank you. We miss you.

Gina

I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replieD、“I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”

On December 31, I wrote my last card—to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me.
