The Yellow River is known as the mother river of the Chinese people. However, flood (洪水) control and disaster forecasts (灾害预报) of the river have always been challenging for people. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.

The digital twin of the Yellow River uses different kinds of technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices (设备) are set up along the river and collect and transmit(传送) information to the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is showed on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.

One big thing in the digital governance (治理) of the river is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a detector with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter init. They are put in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “On feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said.

“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiaoxiong from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately (精确地).”

In the sky, there are flying drones. These drones are designed by engineers to lookatthe river ,its dikes and flood prevention projects. Shen Lin, from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, explains that the drones provide researchers at the command center with photos and information. The researchers use this information to update a 3D model, which helps them test floodwater release plans in case of emergencies.

Under the water and up in the sky, intelligent systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.

When talking about their personalities , people often say they are extrovert (外向型) or introvert (内向型). Introverts, according to Harvard Health, like staying in their own world while extroverts get joy through socializing (社交).

Interest in the personalities is rising with the popularity of MBTI tests on Chinese social media. But some people are “confusing” the description of introverts with that of having a social phobia (社恐). Some even make an excuse of being an introvert to avoid any social events.

Sometimes, it’s understandable because they hope to keep a safe social distance. However, there is a difference. People with the phobia feel uncomfortable with their body and mind when socializing with others.

In Xiaohongshu, a user by the name of Kuaile Xiaoyueba shares her experiences with people who use the phobia as an excuse. As a tutor (辅导员) in high school, Xiaoyueba needs to check on her students’ studies often. When she asks them questions face to face, some students choose to answer. Others, however, don’t answer, turning on their heels (转身) and leaving without a word. In Xiaoyueba’s mind, some of them are truly shy but others are just labeling (贴标签) themselves as “too cool” to respond.  “It makes me sad and even doubt (怀疑) myself,” she wrote.

These students may feel “safe” or be showing their true self. But they may also be pushing away or hurting people who really care about them. Avoiding social situations will not help them in the long term.

Socializing should be a way to bond (联结) with others. No matter if we are introverts or extroverts, we all need to understand each other.

1. Introverts may like _____.

A. talking about their opinions on something openly

B. discussing movies and foods with others

C. staying at home on their own after school

D. spending time with friends for a whole day

2. People who use the phobia as an excuse may _____.

A. not care about their own safety

B. like labeling others in their own ways

C. give others a feeling of impoliteness

D. have problems in their bodies and mind

3. What the tutor’s students do makes her feel _____.

A. proudB. excitedC. boredD. sad

4. What is the main purpose (目的) of the passage?

A. To advise readers to be polite to anybody around.

B. To get readers to help people with real social phobia.

C. To tell readers not to avoid socializing even being an introvert.

D. To teach readers how to be extroverts through socializing.

McCormick Place in Chicago is the largest convention center (会议中心) in North America. It’s covered in glass, which is enjoyable for humans but deadly for birds. On Oct 5, nearly 1000 birds were found dead after having collided (碰撞) with the building’s glass walls. Most of them died on the spot because of broken bones in their heads.

One key reason is the glass. The birds get fooled by it. During the day, the birds fly toward it as it reflects (反射) a perfect image of the sky and nearby trees. As night falls, the bright light from glass buildings attracts (吸引) the birds, who are usually guided by the light of the moon and stars. The recent collision occurred between the night of Oct 4 and early next morning, when the lights in the building were on for an event.

Every year, nearly one billion birds collide with glass in the US, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. In China, bird collisions are also common. In the autumn of 2022 and the spring of 2023, the National Anti-bird Collisions Action Alliance (全国防鸟撞行动网络) reported a total of 190 cases (案例) of bird collision, which included several types of birds listed as second-class protected wildlife (二级保护野生动物).

These sad stories could have been avoided if action had been taken. Many countries and regions have put forward building design ideas to help keep birds safe. These include using less glass in building walls and adding bird-friendly materials and stickers (贴纸) onto the buildings’ walls. Turning off lights at night also helps avoid bird collisions.

Apart from regulations (规定) for bird-friendly building design, we can also do our part to save birds by putting stickers on the glass windows in our homes and closing the curtains (窗帘) at night.

1. What caused the birds’ death at McCormick Place?

A. The lights in the building.

B. The weakness of their head bones.

C. The strong sunlight and moonlight.

D. The perfect images of birds on the glass.

2. Paragraph 3 mainly shows that _____.

A. bird collisions with glass are common and serious

B. bird collisions with glass happen more often in the US

C. China will take action to deal with bird collisions

D. Some bird species are endangered because of collisions

3. What is the key solution to bird collisions?

A. To keep birds far away from buildings.

B. To cut down light pollution.

C. To train birds to avoid glass buildings.

D. To change building design ideas.

4. What can we personally do to stop bird collisions?

A. Use soft materials to cover the glass buildings.

B. Add stickers on the glass windows.

C. Turn on lights at night.

D. Keep curtains closed in the daytime.

5. What’s the purpose of having these regulations?

A. To change building design ideas.

B. To protect bird species.

C. To protect glass buildings.

D. To cut down light pollution.

Imagine you’re in a sci-fi (科幻小说) world, and you video-call your friend. You might see them in a three-dimensional (3D) way – or in holograms (全息影像). Although this isn’t possible in real life yet, researchers recently made holograms easier to create, said a new study.

To take a 3D photo of a person, most hologram technologies need special cameras.Œ They record how the person looks from different angles (角度) under different lights. This information makes the hologram look lifelike. However, holograms can’t be widely used because they are difficult to make.

The researchers from Chiba University in Japan made a new computer program. It can turn normal pictures we take into 3D holograms.

Their program used a technology called deep neural networks (深度神经网络). First, it receives information from an image taken by a normal camera. It then predicts (预测) the depth (深度) of things in the image. For example, in a 3D photo, the background should be deeper than the person.

With all the information, the program creates a 3D hologram. But it can look strange at first. The program will then check the hologram to fix problems and make it look more real.

The program can be used to create holograms in VR headsets (头显设备). For example, a user sends a picture, and the other user can see the “real” look of it in 3D. If it’s used in cars, drivers can see information, such as road signs, in 3D. This makes it easier for the drivers to see and thus makes sure that they won’t miss important information.

In the future, when holograms become more common, they can also help doctors. Medical students can learn quickly by looking at 3D images of the human body, and doctors can better understand a patient’s illness.

1. What does the new program make use of to create a hologram?

A. A normal picture.B. A special camera.

C. Recordings from different angles.D. Recordings under different lights.

2. Compared to the traditional technologies, the new program is  _____.

A. easier             B. more expensiveC. more natural      D. more predictable

3. In what order does the new program work?

a. Predict the depth of things in the photo.

b. Put out the final 3D hologram.

c. Receive a normal photo.

d. Put out an imperfect 3D hologram.

e. Process the 3D hologram again.

A. abcde  B. acdebC. cadeb  D. cabed

4. How might holograms in cars benefit drivers?

A. They make driving more enjoyable.

B. Drivers will find road information easily.

C. They will help predict dangers and traffic.

D. Drivers needn’t mind the cars behind.

5. What does the last paragraph tell us?

A. Holograms might be used in medical fields.

B. Patients won’t suffer during treatment with holograms.

C. We can live in a 3D world earlier than expected.

D. Doctors won’t make mistakes anymore with holograms.

Have you noticed that there are more parks in cities these days? From “pocket parks” between communities to forest parks in the outer cities, local governments have been making efforts to make China’s cities greener.

From 2021 to 2022, Shanghai has transformed 62 woodlands into leisure (休闲) spaces, according to an August report by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau. These leisure spaces open up forests so that visitors can walk through nature and get closer to wildlife, according to the bureau. The city will build 50 more woodland parks by 2025.

In urban areas, more companies and universities have chosen to “open their gates” and share their greenery. For example, the Shanghai Research Institute of Sport Science opened its 1,000-square-meter green land to the public. The park is joined by historical buildings in the area, providing more space for tourists to have a rest.

In Nanning, Guangxi, parks are not only for leisure. The People’s Park has held several non-profit shows. As a way to promote (推广) the local intangible (非物质的) heritage culture, the park welcomes visitors to watch Nanning’s traditional Yong Opera (邕剧).

Parks and fitness also pair well when it comes to urban planning. The new Nanning Flowers Park has several courts for playing ball games, and it often holds fitness events such as tug-of-war matches, according to Nanning Daily.

Apart from meeting people’s needs, parks can also do good for the environment. Take Beijing’s Central Green Forest Park as an example. The park has reached carbon-neutral (碳中和) since it was opened in 2020. This means that although the park’s facilities produce carbon dioxide (二氧化碳), the plants there can absorb (吸收) more to compensate (弥补). According to Beijing News, the park also fully reuses rainwater and creates green energy, such as solar energy, to supply the park.

As cities in China become greener, “park cities” are becoming a reality. The concept (概念) of a park city was first put forward by President Xi Jinping in 2018. It caters to people’s need for a better living experience and is a people-centered concept that takes the form of an improved natural environment in all aspects, noted China Daily.

1.How many woodland leisure spaces were created in Shanghai between 2021 and 2022?

2.What common goal do suburban forest parks and urban pocket parks serve in city planning?

3.What additional functions does People’s Park in Nanning serve besides providing leisure spaces?

4.How does the Central Green Forest Park in Beijing achieve carbon neutrality?

5.What is the concept of a “park city,” and why is it a people-centered idea?
