We celebrated Earth Day in my city last week. The idea of this special day began in the 1960 when life was very different. Few people talked, or even thought, about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were. This worried Gaylord Nelson, who was a senator(参议员)in the US government, and he had an idea. If people around the world knew the Earth was in danger, they might work harder to save it, so he just needed to get their attention(注意). The first Earth Day was just in the United States, but it led to events every year all around the world on April 22 or the nearest weekend depending on where you are.
In my city, last Saturday afternoon lots of people rode their bikes from the park, around the town together and back to the park, spending as much time as they possibly could, so that the cars had to wait. Then we talked to all the drivers in cars which just had one person in them, to explain how wasteful that is and how much pollution it causes. The idea was to make people think about how much they use their cars. In other places, people collected plastic bags for a week and then made a pile of them in the town square. You can do anything as long as it makes people of all ages come together for a few hours and talk about the environment. Last year we had a big music event for young people. Some people said it was a waste of time, but there was information for people to read and announcements(公告)between the bands about how to help protect the environment.
43.What is the writer trying to do?
A.To introduce different events for Earth Day.
B.To explain why Earth Day happens every year.
C.To ask people to take part in this year’s Earth Day.
D. To offer advice to people organizing an Earth Day event.
44. What happened on Earth Day this year in the writer’s city?
A. People rode slowly through the streets.
B. Cars were not allowed in the city centre.
C. Cars had to have more than one person in them.
D. There was a big music event about car pollution.
45. What does the writer think is the most important thing about Earth Day events?
A. There should be some music. B. They should last all day long.
C. Young people should show interest. D. People should take an active part.
46. Which sentence may we read in tomorrow’s newspaper about Earth Day?
C
Sharon first started volunteering at the age of 16. It was the summer before high school, and she hadn’t really understood the meaning behind doing something for others until that day.
Sharon was joining a charity group to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Dallas, Texas. RMH is a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized (住院的) child at little or no cost.
Sharon remembers her first time walking into RMH —- nervous and afraid of saying the wrong thing. After only 5 minutes, she got to know families. “That day, I played with kids, laughed with the adults, and heard many stories.” says Sharon. Since then, she has volunteered with RMH. She likes the joy her volunteering brings to others.
A smile that will always live in Sharon’s memory came from a girl named Caroline —- a patient whose family stayed at RMH.

Charity is big business: in 2020 about 410 billion yuan was raised for charity in China. But every year there is more suffering in the news. Sometimes it feels like people ask us for money everywhere we go. With so many charities, how can they get enough money?
Charity is not a modern idea. Over the years people have found new and interesting ways to get the money they need. In 3500 BC King Hammurabai of Babylon encourage(鼓励)his people to share their wealth with their poorest neighbours. For thousands of years, the world’s main religions(宗教)have encouraged people to do the same. In the1970s more and more people had televisions, so charities made films of suffering(受苦)children and brought the world problems straight into people’s homes. The 1980s was a time of big business, so charities became more business-like: they made money by making and selling everything from Christmas cards to summer holidays!
In the 1990s, famous people like Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jordan made millions of dollar for big international companies like Citroen and Nike. So charities started using famous people too. During the 1990s Sting planned music events for the Rainforest Foundation. With help from other singers, he earned more than $10 million to help protect the lives of people living in rainforests.
Today, charities are using the “personal touch” to earn money. People give more when they can see their money working in the area they live in, and when they have a personal relationship(关系)with the charity.
Some people never give to charities They say that their money cannot mend these world-wide problems. This is true, but most people know that a little help is better than none. Look more closely at charity work and you will see that each person can do something to make our world better.
